Lung Functions Test & Spirometry
Lung function tests are required in any industry whereby a risk assessment has been undertaken and a risk has been identified (under The COSHH Regulations 2002, and Management of Health & Safety Regulations 1999) that workers could be exposed to hazardous substances that contained respiratory sensitizers.
When do I need lung function tests?
Aside from the above, testing should also be performed on employees who are potentially exposed to irritant dusts, gases and vapours in the workplace.
Normally this would include asbestos workers, such as painters, builders, electricians, premises workers and caretakers. Those employees who are exposed to substances or processes where occupational asthma is a known problem or those working with respiratory irritants or sensitizers as defined by COSHH such as welders and woodworkers, those in the cleaning services, painters and repairers.

What is a lung function test?
The term ‘lung functions test" is defined as:
“tests that measure how well your lungs are working. These tests are used to find the cause of problems such as feeling out of breath.” (British Lung Foundation).
Lung function tests measure things like:
- how much air you can take into your lungs
- how quickly you can blow air out of your lungs
- how well your lungs can take up oxygen
- the strength of your breathing muscles
