Musculoskeletal Assessments

Musculoskeletal Assessments

Musculoskeletal health is essential to a full and sustainable working life. It supports functional mobility and dexterity, balance and coordination, and contributes to muscular strength and endurance. As a result, it plays a vital role in almost every type of work, from desk-based roles to physically demanding occupations.

When problems are left unaddressed, they can lead to reduced performance, increased absence, and a higher risk of long-term injury. Early assessment and intervention can make a significant difference.

Why do I need an assessment?

Providing employees with a musculoskeletal assessment helps identify issues early, manage symptoms effectively, and reduce the likelihood of problems becoming long-term or recurring. These assessments are particularly useful where employees experience pain, discomfort, stiffness, or reduced movement that may affect their ability to work safely.

Musculoskeletal assessments can also support employers by providing clear clinical insight into whether work tasks, posture, manual handling, or repetitive movements may be contributing to symptoms.

What happens after an assessment?

If the Occupational Health Advisor (OHA) identifies any concerns during the assessment, the employee may be referred to an Occupational Health Physician. The Physician can assess, identify, and diagnose musculoskeletal disorders where appropriate.

Following this, the employer receives a clear report outlining practical advice, recommendations, and next steps. These may include workplace adjustments, temporary restrictions, treatment suggestions, or further review to ensure the employee can work safely and sustainably.

Supporting employees and employers

Musculoskeletal assessments support both employee wellbeing and business continuity. For employees, they provide reassurance, guidance, and early support. For employers, they offer objective clinical advice that helps inform fair, evidence-based decisions around work capability and adjustments.
