Qualitative Face Fit Testing
Face fit testing ensures that tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment (RPE) seals correctly to the wearer’s face. A good seal is essential. Without it, the effectiveness of the mask is significantly reduced, placing the wearer at risk of exposure to hazardous substances.
Where tight-fitting masks are used in the workplace, employers are legally required to provide evidence that each individual mask has been fit tested. This requirement applies under the COSHH, CLAW and CAW Regulations and covers all industries where respiratory protection is necessary.
What Is Qualitative Face Fit Testing?
Qualitative face fit testing is a pass or fail test based on the wearer’s sensory response while wearing a respirator. It is a recognised method for assessing whether a mask forms an adequate seal on the individual’s face.
During the test, the wearer dons the respirator and a testing hood is placed over their head. A test agent is introduced into the hood while the wearer carries out a series of movements designed to challenge the seal. If the wearer can detect the test agent at any point, the seal is deemed inadequate and the test is failed.
Common qualitative test agents include saccharin (sweet), Bitrex (bitter) and isoamyl acetate, often referred to as banana oil.
When Qualitative Fit Testing Is Suitable
Qualitative face fit testing is suitable for disposable masks and half-mask respirators only. It is not appropriate for full-face respirators or situations where higher levels of respiratory protection are required.
Fit testing must be repeated if there are changes that could affect the fit of the mask, such as significant weight change, facial surgery, scarring or a change in the type or model of mask used.
Legal and Employer Responsibilities
Employers have a duty to ensure that respiratory protective equipment is suitable, properly fitted and used correctly. Face fit testing forms part of this duty and provides essential evidence of compliance with health and safety legislation.
Failing to ensure an adequate face seal can expose employees to serious health risks and may result in enforcement action if compliance cannot be demonstrated.
