Lung Functions Test & Spirometry
Lung function tests support workplaces where risk assessments identify potential exposure to hazardous substances that can affect breathing. Under COSHH and wider health and safety duties, employers may need health surveillance when work could expose employees to respiratory sensitisers, irritant dusts, gases, or vapours.
When do you need lung function tests
You may need spirometry and lung function testing when employees work with substances or processes linked to occupational asthma or respiratory irritation. This often applies to roles that involve dust, fumes, vapours, or sprayed chemicals.
Examples include asbestos related work and building trades, maintenance and premises roles, welding and metalwork, woodworking, cleaning services, painting and repair work, and similar environments where airborne exposure can occur. Risk assessment findings should drive the decision, then the surveillance plan should follow a sensible schedule with regular review.
What is a lung function test
A lung function test checks how well the lungs work. Spirometry is a common workplace method and measures airflow and breathing capacity using a controlled breathing technique into a device. Clinicians use results to spot early change and decide whether someone needs further review or additional controls.
