Occupational Immunisations and Workplace Vaccinations

Vaccination can form part of a workplace control plan when staff may face exposure to infectious disease through their work. Occupational immunisation only applies where a risk assessment shows a realistic chance of exposure, and where an effective vaccine exists.

Many roles never need vaccination as a work control measure. Others do, because the work brings people into contact with biological agents, contaminated materials, or higher risk environments. COSHH and wider health and safety duties sit behind this approach, with risk assessment and proportionate control at the centre.

When occupational immunisations may apply

Occupational immunisation tends to suit roles where the work can create exposure pathways, including healthcare and laboratory settings, sewage and drainage work, grounds and outdoor work, animal handling, and overseas roles where certain infections occur more often.

Workplace exposure can include blood borne viruses such as hepatitis B and hepatitis C, and HIV, as well as risks linked to biological contamination, airborne infection, and water systems. In practice, the risk assessment drives the decision, not a generic checklist.

Some hazards do not have a human vaccine. Leptospirosis is a good example, so the focus moves to controls like hygiene, PPE, and safe systems of work.
