Wellbeing: Why Bother?

At Global OHS, we increasingly receive requests for one-off wellbeing days or ad hoc “know your numbers” sessions. While these are usually well intentioned, they are often reactive and poorly planned, offering limited long-term value if they are not part of a wider strategy.

Wellbeing is not simply about feeling good. It is about the ability to function well at work and in life, taking into account personal circumstances, experiences and the environment people work in. Effective wellbeing requires shared accountability.

A structured wellbeing strategy helps organisations move beyond isolated initiatives. Without this structure, it becomes difficult to understand what value wellbeing activity is delivering or how it supports business objectives. Wellbeing: Why Bother

Wellbeing and business performance

There is strong evidence linking wellbeing with employee engagement and performance. Employees who feel supported are more likely to be engaged, resilient and committed to their organisation. In turn, engaged employees tend to experience better psychological wellbeing and lower levels of sickness absence, creating a positive and reinforcing cycle.

Poor wellbeing, by contrast, is costly. Sickness absence, presenteeism and employee turnover all affect productivity and morale. Replacing employees is expensive, and high turnover often reflects deeper issues around engagement and support.
